Today I’ve been thinking about how it feels to connect with people through social media and not face to face. I’ve just spent all afternoon having lovely chats and making connections with Albert Drive through Twitter, email and by text. I was on Albert Drive, but not outside, not walking, not going into shops, neither seeing the drive in the real sense, having a presence there or creating space for chance encounters.
It was a fine afternoon spent in these virtual conversations, time well spent and time necessarily spent, but I couldn’t help feeling that I was missing something, something of the energy and pace of the place and its people. As a visitor, a guest, who is here for a short time and for a specific purpose it is interesting to note that my level of observation and awareness is much greater than it would normally be.
In the meantime I share a photograph of the flowers at Pollokshields East Station. They greet me every journey to and from Albert Drive and I find myself thanking the person who planted them, and the person, or persons who tend them.
So I look forward to next week when the fruits of this afternoon will lead to real encounters with real people and a walk or two along the Drive.
