Had a great afternoon yesterday with Rachel and Viviane. What a gorgeous, crisp and sunny day it was! I met the girls at Albert Drive studios and had a wee conflab over what was to be done. Just reading over the letters from our neighbours was pretty inspiring and began to see how much potential this part of the process actually could have.
Meeting the ladies at Roshni
Tashi and I went to meet the women at Roshni last week, and it was great talking to them about the project and hearing their ideas and suggestions. I’m going to be running photography workshops at Roshni in a few weeks, and will be introducing the ladies on how to use photography to document their day to life on Albert Drive.
Filming with Bash
Last week, I met up with Bash at the Tramway for a catch-up and trying to make a very rough filming schedule. After assembling a new rig and doing some techy tasks, we decided to venture out onto Albert Drive. Sam, one of Neighbourhood Watch, joined us on our jaunt.
Putting the letters up!
Hi all! This is my first post as a Creative Volunteer, and I’m really looking forward to the many more posts to follow. I came along with Rachel and Mohammed to help put the first letters up on Albert Drive.
Davinder, Viviane and Ruth meet for tea
Monday night and we sat in Albert Drive Studios learning how to blog with cups of tea and chocolate biscuits. It was cold outside but warm inside as we shared our thoughts about the project and particularly how we might blog as a way of capturing our experiences on the project.
Fabrication
Skilled metal workers start to fabricate the frame of a lightweight mobile Tea Caddy House that can be lifted or wheeled into position. It’s a joy working with people that care about what they make and how the public interface with it.
First Day of filming on Albert Drive
On our first day of filming Shona, Sam from ADNW and myself visited Shazia from Libaas Fashion on Albert Drive. Shazia is a great supporter of the project and was one of the first people to be recorded for Albert Drive TV which will be coming soon to a local shop near you. It was really good having Shona (who is one of the creative volunteers on the project) helping me with the filming and she is a great communicator who really engages with the people we meet on the drive.

We ordered materials that give us the correct strength to weight ratios and which are tactile.
Starting work on Albert Drive
I will begin work on Albert Drive in a few weeks, and am very much looking forward to observing and becoming part of the day-to-day life and happenings of this place,
meeting people, and becoming familiar.
Wind and Snow on Albert Drive
Two pairs of socks, a set of thermal leggings and three jumpers later I was dressed and ready to take on the wind and snow that has arrived on Albert Drive. Today’s job was to document all the ‘Letters to my Neighbour’ that have been attached to lampposts by the project team over the past few weeks.
Meeting the team and making new friends
Our first day was great – great for two reasons. The first one is that I got a much clearer sense of what and where and who Albert Drive is – how long and wide it is, how many people live on it, how it changes as you move along it, understanding north, south, east and west and importantly who lives and works where.
Starting the journey with a walk…
I loved the walk along the Drive. I had no idea how long it was. I had no idea how interesting it was. It was great to hear the stories about the people who live there. I hope I do this walk again. I’m sure I will.
My first day on Albert Drive
Just spent a lovely day with the whole team of the ALBERT DRIVE project. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience of meeting all the artists and project team. We shared artistic approaches, feelings about our communities and the changes we would like to see. This day has already started to form some of my approaches to my residency which has been inspired by what I heard from other people.

It was a fine and sunny crisp start to the week today and not the average Monday morning sight on Albert Drive at all.
Research Wall
In October 2012, we took a wall of our studio at Albert Drive and created a time line research wall for the project.
The research began with first settlement at one end of the Drive and we worked left to right along the street and through time.
